Arrival of the Alexandrian Diplomatic Mission

May 2, 2014, 3:30 p.m. local time

Several miles west of the airspace of the Duchy, the fighter escort had turned back, leaving the cargo aircraft and three tankers to proceed to their ultimate destination, the Port Chloe Airport. Contact with the control tower had been properly established, and permission received for Aquila 2 to land (though that call sign was likely to change, considering that the Sovereign of the High Realm, in his capacity as a Prince of the Empire of the Alexandrians, was aboard).

Its three accompanying tankers would land as well, soon enough.

The aircraft taxied as the control tower directed, its enormous and powerful engines giving a whine sufficient to deafen anyone without protective ear covering, and as soon as it was where it was supposed to be, the pilot cut the engines, and two flagpoles were seen on either side of the cockpit - one flying the purple standard of the Empire, the other, flying the more familiar banner of the High Realm.

Right on schedule!

Standing at the beginning of the red carpet, a delegation led by the Lady High Justiciar, which is composed of members of the High Council of the Realm as well as royals, nobles and local officials, awaits the cargo aircraft which is carrying the Alexandrian Diplomatic Delegation.

The red carpet is lined by an honour guard which is composed of alternately members of the Unadorable Rangers, the Jarldom Defence Force of the Duchy of Port Chloe and the Providence Plantations, in full ceremonial dress, as well as women dressed in their local Bunad who are carrying the flag of the area of the Providian Duchy they hail from. Next to the red carpet is the Ducal Piper and Drum Band which will perform both nations' national anthems.

Unlike commercial airliners, this aircraft didn't disembark passengers via a side door. Instead, the large aft cargo door opened to reveal security personnel in different working uniforms, all wearing dark protective eyegear. They fanned out at the tarmac at first, and then, when all was ready, the Second Consul ushered the Sovereign of the High Realm onward to the red carpet, while he followed a discreet distance behind.

While he did not take the salute - that was his principal's job - Jaime Augustin Joaquin Primo de Aguilar noted the line of the honor guard as well as the colors of their dress uniforms, stopping to bow respectfully to the flag of Stormark, and then shaking hands (where permitted) with the local dignitaries.

It caused him to think that the protocol aspect of the Empire could also be developed further, such as personal standards for high government officials. Just like flag officers in practically all armed forces worldwide possessed a banner to announce to all and sundry their respective ranks, high government officials should have the same. Particularly in Alexandria, a land that loved its pomp, protocol, and pageantry.

He took special notice of the piper and the band, standing at attention as both nations' national anthems were played. That was another thing - the Alexandrian forces most certainly had their own massed bands; maybe it was time to bring them out for state occassions?

After the exchange of pleasantries and the conducting of other formalities pertaining to welcoming a high delegation under diplomatic protocol, the members of both the Storish and Alexandrian delegations were ushered towards a line of gilded open carriages which were awaiting them near the Imperial Gate, a private gate situated at the outskirts of Port Chloe Airport which is reserved for the exclusive use of the Imperial House of Ettlingar Freyu and their guests.

The Duchy of Port Chloe and the Providence Plantations is, together with the Duchy of Normandie, the heart of knightly tradition in Stormark and one of those places within the borders of the High Realm where knighthood is most universally esteemed. Tournaments, which are very important social events, are held on a regular basis, and rules governing tourneys and knighthood requirements are much more stringent in Port Chloe and the Providence Plantations than anywhere else in the Lands of the Longships Throne.

In accordance with the aforesaid tradition the Storish hosts had elected to have the open carriages, which would bring them and their honoured Alexandrian guests to Harvest Hall, the seat of the Jarla of the Duchy of Port Chloe and the Providence Plantations, escorted by mounted knights. As a nod to the friendship between the Sister Realms of Alexandria and Stormark, which exists since time immemorial, Imperial Cuirassiers of the Alexandrian Guard, a body of top-notch Alexandrian soldiers who are stationed in Stormark under the provisions of Article 3 of the Glorious Brotherhood Treaty, had been added to the accompaniment. The escort is to be led by the famous lady knight Dame Kendra Harcourt, who is the winner of the Combat on Foot as well as the Jousting at last year's Grand Tournament of Southport, the most important and prestigious tourney in the High Realm.

The High King, the Lady High Justiciar, the Alexandrian Second Consul, and Jarla Wenche Gulbrandsdottir, the Secretary of the High King's Private Cabinet are to be seated in the first carriage of the procession. Several tall and strong footman assisted the Storish hosts and their Alexandrian guests with getting into their carriages.
