In Sicilia, the traditional New Year celebration begins on New Year's Eve. The day is marked by a grand feast, with family and friends, which has as its main course pork and lentils (pork symbolizing the richness of life and lentils symbolizing good fortune). After this meal, people will go out into the streets to dance and celebrate with large firework displays and public bonfires. In some villages, people will literally throw out old belongings around midnight as a symbol of "out with the old, in with the new." In other areas, large musical acts will perform in city centers to entertain the citizens. Some areas even have a parade of locals singing and playing instruments house to house; tradition goes that these groups should be given small amounts of pastries or money, and if they are rebuffed anyone they visit, it will signal a year of bad luck. Overall, the celebrations are very joyous and often go on into the morning on New Year's Day.
