The Fundamental Statute of the Church of Stormark

Seeing the need for a spiritual center for those of the Christian faith, and desiring expression of the intertwining bond between Christianity and Viking civilization, I, Galinn Karisson, as legal head of the Church of Stormark, do proclaim this statute as the governing document of the Church.

I. Micronational Church. The Church of Stormark is a micronational institution committed to the promotion and appreciation of Christian ideals within the High Realm of Stormark. It considers itself a “national church,” specific to the needs of the Stormarkian micronation, but dedicated to the needs of all of the followers of Jesus Christ in Micras.

II. Simulationist Church. The Church of Stormark is a simulationist church, that is, an organization which seeks to guide the spiritual concerns of micronational participants, and open deeper understanding of the Christian faith. The Church does not claim for itself any sacramental authority over its participants.

III. Liturgy and Teachings. The Church of Stormark shall be organized in a Western “High Church” model, and seeks to further the understanding of the Viking Christianity; however, it also acknowledges and makes use of modern innovations and traditions. Liturgically, the Church adopts the Sarum Rite as its official celebratory form, and is guided by the teachings of the great thinkers of Christian thought, but is fundamentally based upon the Holy Bible and the teachings of Jesus Christ.

IV. The Laity. The membership of the Church shall be divided into the clergy and the laity. The laity shall be composed of all members who shall affix their name to the rolls of membership of the church, signaling their belief in the teachings proscribed by the Apostle's Creed. All members of the laity and clergy shall be required to show due respect and decorum to their fellow members, and non-members, at all times.

V. The Clergy. The clergy of the Church is composed of lay members who have been designated to lead the laity in worship, and to preach on the Faith. No clergyperson of the Church of Stormark shall claim the sacramental authority which is held only by those in Holy Orders, validly conferred by macronational Christian Churches alone.

VI. The Archbishop. The spiritual head and chief cleric of the Church of Stormark shall have the title of “His/Her Grace, the Archbishop of Haithabu and Primate of All Stormark.” The Archbishop shall oversee the internal and external welfare of the Church in conjunction with the Holy Synod; in this capacity, the Archbishop shall execute the decisions of the Holy Synod, and may issue edicts on ecclesiastical affairs, which may be overturned by a two-thirds majority of the Holy Synod. The Archbishop shall be elected by a simple majority of the Holy Synod from amongst the membership of the church, and shall serve until death, resignation, or removal by a two-thirds majority vote of the Holy Synod.

VII. The Bishops. The laity shall be grouped into units called dioceses, or sees, which shall be led by clergy known as bishops, who are appointed by the Archbishop. Dioceses shall be erected by the Archbishop, and a bishop may serve in no other diocese than the one he or she has been assigned. A bishop shall be responsible for the administration of diocesan affairs, the observation of pastoral care, and serves as the judicial arbiter of local ecclesiastical disputes. A bishop may also be appointed to a titular see, not possessing territory or laity, to serve the needs of the Church. A bishop shall serve until death, resignation, or removal by a two-thirds majority vote of the Holy Synod.

VIII. Other Clergy. The Archbishop may appoint and assign any number of clergymen to assist in the management of the Church, who shall have the style of Monsignor. There are three grades or ranks of Monsignor: the Protonotaries of the Church, who assist the Archbishop and the bishops in the general administration of the Church; the Archiepiscopal Chamberlains, who aid in worship and spiritual matters and may be attached to specific dioceses; and the Honorary Prelates, who hold their titles as a reward for distinguished service, and may aid the Archbishop in any way he/she considers suitable. A monsignor shall serve until death, resignation, or removal by two-thirds majority vote of the Holy Synod.

IX. The Holy Synod. The Holy Synod of the Church of Stormark, shall be the supreme governing body of the Church of Stormark. It is composed of the Archbishop as chair and the bishops of the Church. The Holy Synod shall be responsible for the formation and interpretation of church doctrine, the issuing of edicts regulating the administration of the church, the election of the Archbishop, and shall serve as the final court of appeal on church matters. All decisions of the Kirkemøtet shall be reached by a simple majority vote.

X. The High Protector. The legal head of the Church shall have the title of “High Protector of the Church of Stormark.” The High Protector shall be a layperson solely concerned with the temporal existence of the Church and shall not intervene in spiritual matters; the sole exception shall be the appointment of the Archbishop if the Holy Synod is unable to choose a successor. The High Protector shall serve until death or resignation, and choose his/her own successor; if the High Protector does not choose a successor, the Head of State of Stormark shall choose a successor.

XI. Miscellaneous Provisions. Galinn Karisson shall cease to hold all clerical office and shall become High Protector of the Church of Stormark.

XII. Amendment. This Fundamental Statue may only be amended by a two-thirds majority vote of the Holy Synod, or edict of the Archbishop sustained by the Holy Synod.

Signed,

Galinn Karisson,

High Protector of the Church of Stormark
