A Backstory

In the post below you may find a backstory that I wrote about the foundation of Adraisia which is currently a Duchy of the Kingdom of Victoria.

Adraisia was founded by an Italo-Norman knight called Tancredo d'Adraisio from the County of Sicilia, which at the time was a colony of the Duchy of Normandie. He is the younger son of a lesser noble and the son-in-law of the Duke of Normandie. Tancredo ended up in Adraisia, which was at the time known to its inhabitants as the North Cape, when seeking shelter in Bruges Bay against a storm while on his way back to Sicilia from Normandie where he had just reconciled with his father-in-law.

As a younger son Tancredo would not inherit any of his father's estates so he was forced to earn a living as mercenary. Fortunatly for him he was a formidable and fearsome fighter. He rose to prominence when he eloped with Lady Richilde, Daughter of Duke Hrodwulf of Normandie. Unsurprisingly, Lady Richilde's father was furious and ordered his bishops to excommunicate the couple. They later fled to the court of Lady Richilde's cousin Duke Gaifier of Gascony for protection. Duke Gaifier took diplomatic action and asked Lady Richilde's father to accept the union as legally binding and welcome the young couple into his circle - which ultimately he did.

The North Cape was at the time suffering from Viking raids from Vinland. After having repulsed a Viking raid the people of the North Cape asked Tancredo to become their leader and he accepted. Shortly after that, his father-in-law created him Count of Adraisia and the North Cape became a colony of the Duchy of Normandie. Thanks to Tancredo's efforts the Viking raids eventually ceased and the County of Adraisia became one of the most properous regions of Micras.

This is the ancient coat of arms of Sicilia. When Tancredo was created Count of Adraisia by his father-in-law, he was granted a coat of arms based on the ancient coat of arms of Siclia but with three eagles in stead of one.

Thank you for this story, Your Majesty. I shall be sure to use it as I develop the history of Sicilia.

You're welcome, Jarl Galinn. I'm glad to be able to contribute to the development of Sicilia.

Why did Sicilia change its coat of arms?

The ancient coat of arms was in the eyes of Sicilia's population was too much associated with Sicilia's past as a colony of the Duchy of Normandie.

Like Iceland switching from a Codfish to a Falcon?
