The keys they hold, what do they represent? It says they are symbolic. Did they actually open something at one point in the past?

Your Grace,

The keys are a visible sign of their authority and power as ranking Ladies of the Imperial Household. They symbolize the keys to the food chests that married Viking women of old wore at their waists.

As the lady of the household, a married Viking woman had to see to it that the food lasted during the long, dark winter. She made butter and cheese, dried and smoked meat and fish for storage and she was also expected to know about herbs for making medicine and care for the sick and wounded. The farm animals were also her responsibility and when her husband went trading, hunting, or raiding she also ran the farm in his absence.

The keys of the Sacred Queens and the High Queen Consort can open the gates of the Vanadísarhall, the granaries and other food storages of the Vanadísarhall, the Imperial Treasury and its vaults, as well as several other buildings on the premises of the Vanadísarhall, such as the Hall of the Fulltrui, which is the building where the Imperial Longships Throne stands.
