  1. רעפובליק פון אשקענאצא - Republic of Ashkenatza Your Majesty, Your Excellencies, It pleases the Republic to once again send our most heartfelt greetings and best wishes to our friends and allies in the High Kingdom of Stormark. It is lamentable that contact as of late has fallen below acceptable levels but the recent LOA of several of our leading politicians and the Republic's continuing preparations for both a new Constitution and new forum have been the focus of most if not all of the government's activity as of late. Our new forum is proceeding quicker than expected and we reasonably expect to be conducting government business on it by the end of this month. The Republic recently elected its Fifteenth Nohsi, Herr Eli Naveh, a long veteran of our naval forces, the Ashkenatzer Militerisher Yamteyl, who now prepares to steer the ship of state towards a brighter Maroon future. With a good captain at the helm, one can be sure of a successful voyage, yet it is the sailors beneath deck who run the machinery of state. A democracy cannot function without the equal work of all for the common weal, towards new shores where all want to disembark and start their lives anew. The folly of the autocrat lies in his failure to understand that his commands from the ship's bridge may touch the valiant workers through the whip, but never to the heart. The enlightened vanguard of Micran democracies and the illustrious court of the Viking Realm understand this, and our Nohsi salutes the people of this nation as it sails alongside us as a great companion. By the order of Der Nohsi I am now official Ashkenatzi Ambassador to the High Realm and should the Knesset please my goals will be to increase community contact between Ashkenatzim and Stormarkers in unofficial visits, for closer military co-operation and joint manoeuvres of our respective nations' forces on the field, and to cement solid contingency plans for a joint threat to both our nations. Snæland plays a key role in this regard as Stormark's Benacian territory and Ashkenatzi links to the region are to be encouraged. I would recommend any suggestions from my Storish colleagues regarding mutual areas of co-operation and interest and have the honour to remain, Goltz, Foreign Minister and Ambassador to the High Realm
  2. Best wishes from Ashkenatza

THE TREATY OF THE FALCON AND THE EAGLE FALK OG ØRNS TRAKTAT העסקעם דער פאַלקאַן און אָדלער An eight-point pact of alliance and co-operation between the Republic of ASHKENATZA and the High Realm of STORMARK In the name of Democracy, Stability, and a peaceful Micras of free brother-nations, for a shared future based on mutual respect, dialogue, and peaceful resolution in their own Territories and Dependencies and throughout the world, both nations join a shared path to a friendship built on unity and a common cause. Standing fast against autocracy and its insidious growth, enslaving once noble and free lands, the two parties hereby enter into a Pact of Alliance based on the following principles of partnership and co-operation: I: Both parties hereby respect fully each other's sovereignty, possessions, virtual or physical, and respect fully their territorial integrity. Neither party shall condone, aid, or initiate any move to threaten the sovereignty or territorial integrity of the other, overt or covert. II: Affirming that an attack on one party is an attack on them both, both parties hereby commit themselves to non-aggression and to defend eachother from common enemies and threats. Both parties affirm that in the event of a threat towards the security of the other, they will take whatever means they deem necessary, including armed force, to retain the security and integrity of the attacked party. III: For the weal and prosperity of all, economic co-operation including but not limited to a common market, bilateral trade and investment incentives shall be encouraged by the governments of both nations. IV: Military co-operation shall be established via military liaison officers and a joint command established. The armed forces of both nations shall enjoy the right of freedom of movement and shall be permitted to use military facilities after prior notification across the territories held by both parties. The parties agree to work together on the standardisation of equipment and munitions, the sharing of information relevant to interests of national security of one or both signatory parties and joint military training exercises. V: Community and cultural co-operation is a key feature of the stability of any alliance and both governments shall actively encourage their citizens to visit their allies and acquaint themselves with the culture and community of the other party. VI: Political co-operation between both parties shall include but not be limited to the presentation of unified front on certain foreign policy objectives, a co-ordinated approach to intermicronational development and issues of law enforcement and other internal security matters. A commitment to human rights and democracy is a cornerstone in the Foreign Policies of both parties as civilised and developed members of the pantheon of Micran nations and both shall actively make a stand for the rights of the oppressed of those under the thumb of Autocracy and its barbarism. Both parties shall invite the other to open a Legation in their respective capital cities to facilitate the full implementation of all key points as agreed to in this document. VII: Both parties shall endeavour to identify key areas of shared concern in the Benacian Arctic (the closest Storish and Ashkenatzi territories)- such as joint patrols, economic rights, co-operation in law enforcement, cultural exchanges and improved transport links to ensure the prosperity of Ashkenatzi and Storish lands in the region (defined here as Storish Snæland and Gascony, and Ashkenatzi Tsofnland). VIII: This Treaty shall enter into law upon receipt of all ratifications by accredited representatives of both parties. It shall likewise be amended only by mutual assent of both parties and similarly amendments shall come into force upon receipt of the necessary ratifications. Either party may signal its withdrawal from this Treaty by giving the other written notification of its intentions to terminate it, after which it shall terminate one month after receipt of notification. For the Republic of Ashkenatza: His Excellency Herr Moshe Goltz, Commissar of the Republic and Deputy Foreign Minister For the High Realm of Stormark: Lady Unna of Skálavík of the House of Vanadís, Bloodroyal and Jarla of Freyja's Necklace, Royal Chieftainess of Skálavík, High Justiciar of the High Realm of Stormark. On this date, the 27th of July, 2012 (5772)
  3. Best wishes from Ashkenatza

Excellencies, It is my great pleasure to inform you that their Excellencies the Nohsi and Foreign Minister of the Republic, with the support of the Knesset, have empowered me to sign the Treaty of the Falcon and the Eagle on Ashkenatza's behalf, at your convenience. I remain, Goltz
  4. Best wishes from Ashkenatza

Hopefully the first stages of our forum move- namely getting the new forum to actually work with a proper skin and porting the posts over- should happen over the next week or so. Summer seems to always be sluggish in the Sector so the forum move will inevitably take longer than we intend it to. Thanks for your information on Stormark's citizenry; it's always seemed to me that Stormark has a higher percentage of one-cit members than other nations, a trait which Ashkenatza also shares- which in a way adds to the relative isolationism our nations are sometimes seen as having. It's also a good strength to have a strong circle of Old Guard who remain dedicated to one place- helps to give a nation actual character. Taking into account some other bilateral links I discussed regarding the Duchy of Gascony, it seems that there is real scope for greater co-operation in the Benacian Arctic, where both our nations have real and shared interests due to our possessions in the area. A co-ordinated approach to forming a joint policy in this region could aid the population of Gascony immeasurably, helping her people overcome the regrettable legacy of the Gascon conflict, and helping Ashkenatza in her mission to maintain the Benacian stability and the absolute principle of territorial integrity of our respective nations. Benacia has a wealth of ancient peoples and cultures- a glorious history- and it is fitting that Stormark, though her holdings on the great continent may be modest in size, assert herself as a fellow Benacian nation and an active partner in Benacian affairs. Our Republic is convinced that Stormark holds a place in the pantheon of Benacian brother-nations and the struggle against autocracy and will aid her in taking her rightful place. Accordingly, another article in this Treaty has been added, as has the new title. With Your Excellencies' blessing, I hope we can consider this above version the definitive draft of this Treaty and submit it to our respective Legislative Bodies for ratification.
  5. Highness, Given that Ashkenatza and Stormark are at present making strides- or rather, leaps and bounds- to improve their bilateral relationship it seems to me fitting that Gascony, as a territory of the High Realm on Benacia, should play an important role in this relationship. Ashkenatza's primary doctrine in her Foreign Affairs has been that of Benacian Stability- one which we have found our Batavian neighbours have been helpful towards and other nations on the continent perhaps less so. Foreign meddling in Benacia threatens to undermine the security hammered out over endless negotiations well into the evening between Ashkenatza and Elwynn- though thankfully and at long last those relations appear to be on the mend- and I believe it would be of interest to my Republic for Gascony to serve as a strategic centre in Benacia for co-operation between my Republic and her friends in Stormark. Ashkenatza took no role in the Gascon War of 2009 yet we feel that the time has come to take a more proactive and constructive approach given that we now have a friend in the Benacian North. With your blessing, I would aim to work in a special clause in our current drafting of the Ashkenatzi-Stormark Treaty to identify shared areas of interest in the Benacian North, such as economic rights, joint patrols and co-operation of law enforcement, and increased transport links between Lannion and Tsofnhafn. We would also hope to arrange direct flights from Kolmenitzkiy to Lannion and open an Ashkenatzi Consulate in Gascony for the benefit of Ashkenatzi visitors and investors. We are convinced that a co-ordinated Ashkenatzi-Stormarker strategy in the Benacian North would greatly contribute to the weal and prosperity of all its inhabitants. Mit Grusn, Goltz, Commissar of the Republic
  6. I don't know if anybody here has been to Istanbul- and if you haven't, make sure you do as a point of urgency- but when I saw this forum's main theme I thought I'd share an interesting bit of trivia about Istanbul's ancient Byzantine Cathedral, the Haghia Sophia, which was later turned into a mosque by the Ottomans. On the upper gallery facing the apse, there are some Runic Viking inscriptions which were discovered in the 1960s by a Swedish visitor to Turkey, which simply spell the name Halfdan. Historically it's quite feasible as there were plenty of Norse traders who reached Byzantium- which they called Mickegard- and I believe there have been Byzantine and Abbasid coins found in Scandinavia. Also, there's a long history of Viking influence in present-day Russia and Ukraine. It's said that the Slavs invited a Norse people called the Varangians to rule them, which resulted in the first Royal Dynasty of numerous Russian principalities being the Ruriks- a noble family of Viking origin. The Arab traveller Ibn Fadlan also wrote that he saw a Norse funeral barge on the Volga during his travels. The Vikings appear to have got to some surprising places... which I suppose gives some more legitimacy to Stormark's seeming to own all the most far-flung Isles on Micras!
  7. Iceland's Thingvellir

I visited Thingvellir a few years ago and was pretty impressed not so much by the fact that this was the oldest parliament (there are other contenders to the title such as the Isle of Man's Tynwald), but mainly the very visible rift between the North American and European plates. I've jumped from one to the other. And back. Can't say that they differ much on first glance! I'd recommend Iceland to anybody for a visit but it is extremely expensive- probably partly due to the majority of produce being imported (don't count on having affordable drinks in the evening)- and Reykjavik is a nice if small city. An island of Iceland's size with a population not larger than 300,000 makes the place feel pretty empty and lonely at times, which can be an advantage or disadvantage depending on what type of holiday you're looking for.
  8. Introducing myself

Thanks for the welcome! I would be particularly interested to know, if I can, who is who and who are the 'main players' in Stormark politically. I confess to ignorance about Stormark's exact style of governance and given that Stormark is now the most active nation in the Sector I haven't yet had time to familiarise myself with everybody here. Are there any dual citizens of other nations who I may know besides His Majesty?
  9. Best wishes from Ashkenatza

All good suggestions, thankyou- Treaty of the Falcon and Eagle in particular. However I must add that at present, Ashkenatza has just begun the lengthy and complex process of moving forums and hosting- as such our Knesset at the moment is chiefly concerned with the impending move and it may be a little while yet before I can submit the agreed Treaty text to the House for ratification. On the plus side the new forum will solve all issues of registration I understand some Stormark subjects have experienced, and can do nothing but help to forge a stronger link between our two communities. I apologise for the inconvenience and will continue to be in regular contact, Goltz
  10. Best wishes from Ashkenatza

Republic of Ashkenatza Ministry of Foreign Affairs - אויסלאנדס מיניסטעריום Excellencies, Many thanks for your kind words. I must reiterate that as Commissar, and mere Deputy Foreign Minister of the Republic, I do not possess the executive powers to ratify a Treaty with a foreign power and that any text we agree upon must be ratified by the Knesset before either my colleague Herr Astopov or Der Nohsi himself Herr Gambetta can affix their signatures. I recall some conversations in Alexandria in which various names for this Pact had been discussed- my Republic's Treaty with Alexandria is known as the Treaty of the Two Eagles, for example. A similar idea had been floated informally but I would appreciate any other ideas. At present I am going under the working name of The Eight Point Treaty Here is a draft Treaty I have prepared, including all the provisions I would imagine both parties would require: I remain, Goltz, Commissar of the Republic
  11. Introducing myself

Just informally introducing myself to the community and hoping to maintain more regular contact here in Stormark as befits a nation with which my Republic hopes to pursue closer ties. I think we have a lot in common so you can expect to see more of me around Stormark in future- I hope my fellow Ashkenatzi citizens also drop in to say hello over the next few days. Also I thought I should point out that one quote by a Stormarker- namely that the problems of registering on Ashkenatza's forum were 'legendary'- was a large contributor to my being behind a Knesset resolution for us to move forums soon. It may be difficult for you to register now but we should have a much more open and usable forum with a nice new skin in the not-too-distant future! Goltz
  12. Best wishes from Ashkenatza

I thank His Majesty and Your Excellency for your kind words and for the opening of the Ashkenatzi Legation. It is indeed long overdue that the banners of our nations should fly together over the rooftops of Haraldsborg and Kolmenitzkiy- I will later officially open the Embassy and appoint a permanent diplomatic staff. Unfortunately we regret to reform our Stormarker friends that Ashkenatza is currently preparing to move forums, and as a result we feel that a Stormark Embassy should be opened as part of our new, sleek, and more accessible Ashkenatzi forums where our foreign friends will find it easier to visit us. The Legation of Normark, now the Nordic Union, specially designed to reflect a modern Norse architecture, may serve the High Realm's purposes well. Republican carpenters and artisans toiled night and day over the intricate runes on its carved wooden roof, yet our Norse friends repaid us in kind with a transition of their government to a bellicose and bombastic Military Junta, in which the same self-declared Grand Marshall occupies every position in its mockery of a cabinet. Democracy, as a noble cause and noble principle should be conducted with nobility of spirit, humility and open-mindedness. In this comparison between our world's two Nordic states we see which one has truly earnt its medals and braid- the High Realm is invigorated with spirit through the debates long through the night over mead and song. In a longship, all oars must row- all are equal before the great power of the dark ocean and only through unity and the guidance of a good helmsman can the waters be traversed. Our Republic salutes the nobility which the Royalty of our Alexandrian and Stormarker allies bring to democracy- a principle for which no crown is too opulent, too extravagant. My Republic would seek a firm and bilateral Treaty emphasising mutual defence and co-ordinated intermicronational partnership. We would seek the following points which I am sure my colleagues would also see as the basis for an agreement: Non-aggression: Both parties refrain from participating in or aiding in any way enemy actions and espionage which threaten the security of the other party, and shall denounce attempts by enemy parties to do so. Both parties completely respect the territorial integrity and sovereignty of the other. Alliance: Both parties will consider themselves to have entered into a political and military alliance with the other- an attack on one party shall be seen as an attack on both and responded to accordingly. To this end both parties shall attempt to pursue a co-ordinated Foreign Policy and foster active military co-operation. The territories of both nations shall be open to military access for the armed forces of the other. Embassies of both nations shall be maintained. Free trade: Both parties, where applicable, shall take active measures to foster a vibrant commercial relationship and encourage investment in the other. Citizens of both nations shall enjoy visa free access to eachothers' territories. Closer transport links and joint economic ventures shall be fostered by both governments. Cultural and Community co-operation: Both nations shall make active attempts to widen knowledge of the partner's culture and society so as to foster closer contact between both communities and encourage citizens of both nations to regularly be in contact with eachother. This is of course a very rough draft but if Your Excellencies have any other ideas- including of course a name for this treaty- then I would be very grateful. I remain, Goltz
  13. Best wishes from Ashkenatza

Republic of Ashkenatza Ministry of Foreign Affairs - אויסלאנדס מיניסטעריום אאא Deres Kongelige Høyhet and the government of the High Realm, I am very pleased to bring the very best wishes of His Excellency Nohsi Gambetta and the Republican Knesset to these shores with our deepest regrets that the level of communication between our two nations has not thus far represented the strength of our political and economic partnership. It is my intention and that of my Foreign Minister Herr Astopov, who I am pleased to see has already introduced himself, to remedy the situation and build on the co-operation we enjoy for a stable Benacia- for the Republic does not exclude from its considerations the Stormarker presence in Gascony, a rare light in dangerous times when the much craved Benacian stability seems once more fragile and out of reach. It is therefore testament to the strength of our friendship that the original assumption in my Republic had been that our nations had signed a Treaty which adequately reflected it, but sadly we have discovered to our surprise that this is not so. Democratic accountability and a true state which serves its citizens is a rare gem in the darkness of Micras today and as states with conscience, dignity, and shared principles of peaceful co-existence and dialogue it is meet that we become ever stronger partners. Should it please Your Excellencies and His Majesty I would be happy to start negotiations to draft a Treaty representing our partnership, which exists at present in practice but not in the realms of bureaucracy, on paper and in ink. I hope to receive special accreditation to oversee this matter from Herr Astopov and from then on I believe we can begin negotiations for a Treaty which adequately represents the current state of affairs and build further together for a brighter future for both our peoples and that of our mutual friends the Alexandrians. It is my intent to increase my activity in Stormark to ensure that there is a more permanent liaison between our nations and a permanent link between our communities. To this end I would also aim to open a Legation sub-forum for the High Realm in Ashkenatza at Your Excellencies' convenience. I have the honour to remain, M. Goltz Commissar of the Interior of the Republic
