    Joyous the Longest/Shortest Day!

And so I'm back in the civilised world. The hikes are on-line (www.polten.be - Dutch only ...) Next trip: Maybe France - Auvergne somewhere end August, early September.
  2. According to this beer commercial Belgians stole the Viking beer. What a ridiculous idea. We wouldn't let anybody steel our beer, would we?

    Joyous the Longest/Shortest Day!

We will move to the Dorchester area (Weymouth) in a few days. That will be the last stop of a trip that started in Bath, then to the Exmoor moores (highly recomended for those who are looking for a bit of wild nature), Cornwall, Dartmoor, Dorchester. A meet and greet with South-West England. When I'm back I wil publish the hikes we made on my website ....

    Joyous the Longest/Shortest Day!

Cornwall apeared to be a tourist trap. We moved east and are wandering through the moores of Dartmoor. Internet access is a rare and expensive good around here. It's time that Vikings should bring civilasation to these barbarians.

    Joyous the Longest/Shortest Day!

I'm enjoing this long sunny (but cold and windy) evening in Cornwall. It's the hfirst night in this country that I might see the stars. This time, the turning of the season may bring a change of weather..

Happy New Year!! Nature starts a new cycle and we, Vikings follow it.

Hall of the Jarl of Vinland

So this is Vinhǫll. I'm impressed by Thorvalds Great Hall. This hall will continue to be the seat of power of Vinland. It will of course need to be 'refreshed', after all, this place has been abandoned for some time. When it is done, there will be a Viking feast. Roasted ox and mead?

Orders in Council #242, Sir Polten: Jarl of Vinland

Your Highness, I'm honoured. Thank you very much.
  11. Your Highness, I would like Vinland to be a traditional Viking Jarldom. It is situated in the north and therefore it is very well adapted to be a place where Vikings live in their traditional ways. "The cluster of grapes symbolises to Vinland's viniculture where this Jarldom is renowned for since ancient times.": The climate in the Viking nations, this far to the north, doesn't allow viniculture. This is a bit of a problem. In heraldry the grapes not necessarily refer to viniculture. I refer to this website . Grapes also are a symbol of happiness, bliss and peace. Fruits of all kinds was considered Proof of God's goodness. Can that be changed? Your servant, Polten of Yperpen

    Vinland - Coat of Arms

Thank you very much your Highness. I'll get some life into Vinland soon.
  13. Neil Gaiman, my favourite writer, has published a book with Norse Myths. Read the review in the Guardian here. ; For somebody who likes a good story and is interested in the Norse Mythology this is a must-read. Mind you, Gaiman is a story teller. Some of the myths tell the old myths, others are invented.

    Polten!

So I have moved to my cabin in Straumsjøen. Small but comfortable, situated at the fjord. I will try to upload a few summer pictures. Now that winter is approaching, the sun hardly rises above the horizon. Time for contemplation ... I will look for a more suitable accommodation in the next months.

    Polten!

I found a fantastic map of the High Realm of Stormark by one LingonB, commissioned by His Imperial and Royal Majesty. Marvellous! Would I be in anybody's way when I settle in Straumsfjordur? That is in Vinland, next to Normandie. I completely lost track of the who's who in Stormark, so please take no offence if I get in your way. There is absolutely no hurry to restore the house. Let's wait and see.

    Polten!

Dear friends, I hop in every now and then to see how you are doing. I was surprised that there were no more censuses. I went through the recent messages on the board and there are a few interesting Viking Items. I must admit that I have lost my way in politics over here. I'll be there more often (should be possible now that I am retired). Maybe I'll look for a virtual place to settle down. c.u.

Vikings: Half of the Warriors Were Female

Isn't it strange that it takes Australian investigators to find this? Vikings left very little written information and so we depend on their enemies for information and they are not an objective source. On the other hand, I must admit that 13 bodies is not enough to be conclusive information.

    What Did Vikings Eat?

I'm afraid the Norse land was not generous. Life was hard for the Vikings. I think you will find reliable information on these pages: http://www.hurstwic.org/history/articles/daily_living/text/food_and_diet.htm When referring to the Vikings al raiders and looters, please don't forget that our knowledge of history comes from written sources. The Vikings didn't write much, their enemies, especially Christian folks, wrote a lot of information, not always reliable. You can hardly expect the victims of raids to write gently about the raiders. Just try to imagine what an army of crusaders walking from France across Germany, Balkan, Turkey, Syria to Palestine would steel on it's way. You can't carry all the food and they surely couldn't afford to buy it. Still they wrote history and their wrongdoing is covered by the mists of time ....

  24. The article says that Vikings were filthy people. This is probably not true. Follow the link to an interesting article. http://www.danishnet.com/info.php/vikings/cleanliness-139.html. There is an interesting reference to the Arab writer Ibn Fadlan in both articles.
